Saludos | Welcome
Welcome to my photo website & blog!
Yes, I’m a photographer, too. Who knew? Became one over fifty years ago when I first got me a Konica rangefinder, then a Canon SLR. Well before digital cameras were invented. Never quite became a “professional”, someone who gets paid for their work. Instead remained an enthusiast, or an “amateur”, which actually means “a lover of” and not a novice as is commonly misunderstood. A lover of photography and the art making of photographs. Go figure!
For my entire adult life I’ve been committed to work in psychology, spirituality, social justice organizing, racial equity education, liberation and transformation. As I engage life and its challenges in my elder years, I remain committed to the same underlying core principles and values. I have also committed to further developing other outlets of creative expression — especially in the form of photography.
These past few years, particularly since my diagnosis with prostate cancer, my lens of attention seems, increasingly, to want to focus not only on, but beyond the struggle, “la lucha” — the assumption that life is, inherently, limited to the unrelenting battle against obstacles and limitations, both from within and from without. At this time, my soul appears to require I look slightly ahead, and ever more deeply. Not to escape from my personal battles or seek refuge from the shared challenges of our times. Rather, my soul seems to demand I expand my horizons. Literally. That I explore other places, that I meet new people, that I consider other possibilities, develop other potentials. And who am I to say no to my soul, right?
Therefore, I’ve created this space to share some of my images and, every now and then, my not-so-random observations, thoughts and ideas regarding topics that interest me. Maybe if I am lucky I’ll stumble upon insights or inspiration or something that adds to the narratives of hope, joy, and triumph and that contributes to the evolution of human culture.
